Community Service Program –
The Community Service Program is one of three components of the national schools’ Guidance and Counselling Program. Participation in Community Service is a requirement which will allow students to carry out or participate in meaningful service experiences that develop civic responsibility and meet actual community needs. It is designed to foster the development of volunteerism, empathy, personal values, awareness of environment and self, self-confidence, social responsibility, life skills, a sense of caring and citizenship.
Students engage in community service outside of the regular timetabled curriculum sessions in the school system. Students are required to complete 60 hours of Community Service over a 3 year period, starting at grade 9.
The Community Service Program provides an opportunity for students to discover themselves, develop skills and gain experiences that will empower them in their quest to personal development, and career development. In more definitive terms, Community Service will help to:
- Foster a sense of caring for others
- Teach the responsibility of citizenship
- Extend learning beyond the classroom and into the community
- Provide an opportunity for students to develop skills and knowledge in real life situations, and then reflect on these experiences and demonstrate their learning
- Improve interpersonal skills
- Create a spirit of civic responsibility
Students may select the location to complete their voluntary hours but this must be a location approved by the school. Students may only select Government based organizations.
A contract must be filled out by the parent/ guardian, the institution, and the student engaging in community service.
